Biography

The below information has been assumed to be the same Daniel where there is much proof to link Jacobite Daniel to "Scotch Daniel" also of Charles County, Maryland. No proof that the letter or information connects to this Daniel.

Added By? Name: Daniel McPherson Year: 1716 Place: America Source Publication Code: 8690 Primary Immigrant: McPherson, Daniel Annotation: List of about 300 Scottish rebels captured at the Battle of Preston, Lancashire, in 1716 and transported variously to South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, St. Christopher and Barbados.

Also in no. 2989, Headlam, and partially in n Source Bibliography: SMITH, CLIFFORD NEAL. "Transported Jacobite Rebels, 1716." In National Genealogical Society Quarterly, vol. 64:1 (Mar. 1976), pp. 27-34.

Added by Nicole Polk before merge: Here are some records related to Daniel McPherson of Charles County, Maryland:

Nally, John, planter, Charles County, 6th Feb., 1732/3; 3rd Mch., 1732/3, To son Denis and hrs., 75 A. being pt. of 2 tracts "'Georges Rest" and "Huskilow's Addition", provided sd. son make over and confirm to son Joseph and hrs., 50 A. To son William ex. and hrs., 75 A. being residue of tracts bequeathed son Denis, Test: Daniel McPherson, William McPherson, Samuel Chunn, (Churm). 20,578.

John Nalley 12.116A A CH £100.14.6 £35.3.6 Nov 10 1733 There are two folios numbered 116; for identification purposes, the first is cited as 116A, the second as 116B. Sureties: Samuell Chunn, Daniell Macferson. Received from: Daniel Mcferson, Henry Teveson. Payments to: Samuell Bishop, Joseph Gardiner, Patrick Mullen, Richard Edelin, executor of John Eburnathy, Dr. John Haw, Daniel Mcpherson, John Wathen, John Parnham, Samuell Belwood. Executor: William Nalley.

Daniel is listed in the 1733 Tax Rolls for Newport section of Charles County Maryland. He is listed in spot 20 and William McPherson (son of Alexander Sr.) is listed in spot 19 (living next to Daniel). Also living very close are the Nalley/Nally family above and the Tennison's.

McPherson, Daniel, planter, Charles County, 22nd May, 1740; 1st Oct., 1740. To wife Elizabeth, extx., sons Richard, Bassill and Alexander at 18 yrs. and daus, Mary and Elizabeth at marriage, entire estate. Test: Francis Ignatius Boarman., William McPherson, Jr, and Susanna Malley (Nally). 22.275.

From this summary above of Daniel's Will (I have the entire document) we learn the names of Daniel's children: Richard, Basil, Alexander, Mary and Elizabeth (possibly listed in birth order). We can also tell that they are all considered minors by law. Also note the witnesses are Francis Ignatius Boarman, William McPherson and Susannah Nally. We also learn that the Will was signed and witnessed on May 22, 1740 but not submitted to court until Oct. 1, 1740 So we learn from this that Daniel died sometime between May 22 and Oct. 1 1740.

Daniell McFerson 25.414 CH £68.8.0 Nov 6 ---- Aug 1 1741 Appraisers: G. Hatton, Justinian Cooksey. Executrix: Eliza McFerson.

From this probate document above we learn 1) that it was common for some estates to take very long in probate during this time and 2) that Elizabeth McPherson Daniel's wife is the executrix and 3) she has not married to Ignatius Tennison yet (Aug 1, 1741) so 4) her marriage to Ignatius Tennison takes place between Aug 1, 1741 and Nov 1743.

Nov. 1741 - Charles Co., Md. Court. The Charles Co. Court of Nov. 1743 sets forth the final account and distribution, dated Nov. 1741, for the estate of Daniel Macpherson by Ignatius Tenneson and Elizabeth his wife, executrix. The account shows that the total estate assets were 90/1/6, that disbursements had been made amounting to 82/19/2, leaving a balance of 7/2/4 to be disposed of according to law and Daniel's will. The sureties for Elizabeth's executorship were Alexander Macpherson, Sr., and William Macpherson, Jr., both of Charles Co. Source: Charles Co., Md. Court and Land Records, Liber 39, p. 668.

Now we learn from the above final account that took place Nov. 1743 that Elizabeth has married to Ignatius Tennison. This is also important because it shows that Alexander McPherson Sr. (Daniel's probable father) is providing surety for Elizabeth's executorship along with William McPherson (his brother).

This Daniel McPherson that died bet. May 22, 1740 and October 1, 1740 in Charles County, Maryland did not marry a woman named Elizabeth Thompson!!!! Or Elizabeth Wheelock or any of the various other Elizabeth's that I have seen listed as his wife! He did marry Elizabeth Nevitt. There are records to prove this, not just a theory I have! We know this because Elizabeth married Ignatius Tennison before the account of Daniel's inventory was complete! Elizabeth's parents were Richard Nevitt and Mary Montgomery. Mary Montgomery remarried after Richard Nevitt died to Edmund MacAtee. Mary MacAtee Will leaves legacy to John Tennison s/o my daughter Elizabeth. Mary MacAtee's Will:

MACATEE, MARY, Charles Co. 8 Nov. 1774; 21 Dec. 1774 To grandchildren, children of my son John Nevitt, Negro man John Cooke, beds, pots, blankets, stock, to be in possession of my son John Nevitt during life then to his children. To grandson William Miles Nevitt, son of Richard Nevitt, furniture, stock. To grandson John Tennison, son of my dau. Elizabeth Tennison, stock, 400 #. tobacco. To dau. Ann Birch, Negro woman Lucy, 1000 #. tobacco, book. To dau. Rosamond Macatee, stock, pewter. To grandson John Nevitt, Jr., Negro man Ben, stock, wearing apparel. To grandson Charles Nevitt, stock, iron pot. To daus: Ann Birch and Rosamond Macatee, wearing apparel. To son and grandson John Nevitt, Will'm. Miles Nevitt, residue. To son John Nevitt, ex.; if he dies grandson Will'm. Miles Nevitt, ex. Wit: Barbara McPherson; Catherine McPherson; Thos. McPherson. 40. 168

From Mary's Will you can clearly see that she has children with the Nevitt surname and children with the MacAtee surname. Elizabeth's sister Ann (Mary Ann) Nevitt marries a Birch man (Oliver) and Mary says to grandson John Tennison, son of my daughter Elizabeth Tennison...

We have the records to prove that Elizabeth Nevitt/McPherson/Tennison had a son John Tennison. She is listed as Elizabeth Tennison wife of Ignatius in two separate documents. The Thompson rumor comes directly from this record:

Thompson, James, Charles County, 30th Mch., 1733; 14th Aug., 1734. To wife Jane, extx., 1/3 part of "Thompson's Hope," lying on s. side of the North Branch, during life; after her decease to John McPherson and hrs., remaining part to John McPherson and hrs. To Richard McPherson and hrs., the part of afsd. tract lying on N. side of sd. branch. The whole tract is bequeathed to the longest liver. To John and Richard McPherson, personalty. Test: Randolph Morris, Jonathan Wilson, Anne Grissom. 21. 188.

In no way does this indicate that James Thompson was the father of Elizabeth who married Daniel in fact he was leaving land to John McPherson (son of Alexander Sr. and Richard McPherson Daniel's oldest son) because he had no children of his own to leave land to. I believe that this makes complete sense as I believe Daniel and John McPherson were brothers and both the son's of Alexander McPherson b. 1679.

Richard Nevitt's Probate:

Richard Nevett 10.120 CH £79.2.1 Sep 3 1724 Oct 1 1724 Appraisers: John Beale, Alexander Macfearson (also Alexander Macferson). Creditors: Will. Chandler, Walter Davis. Next of kin: John Nevett (brother). Administrators (name not given).

Richard Nevitt 7.90 A CH £79.2.1 £54.5.7 Aug 16 1725 Received from: William Mcferson, James Kennedy, Thomas Ryon, John Beale, Thomas Keybord, Thomas Sympson, Jr., John Ward. Payments to: Mr. William Chandler, Walter Daviss, Samuel Hanson, Mr. Edmond Jennings, Mr. Daniel Jenifer, James Parrandine. Administratrix: Mary Nevitt.

It's important that the true identity of Daniel be corrected as so many have copies/pasted false information to their trees. Many have his wife as Elizabeth Thompson. It's not. It is Elizabeth Nevitt. Still others have him as being the "Kidnapped Daniel". He's not. Some have him as a Jacobite prisoner" We was not. He was in Charles County. MD before the arrival of the 1716 Jacobite prisoner ships.

He was NOT the son of Alexander Sandy McPherson 1682-1755 and Ruth Shires. This comment left previously by another edit is very much inaccurate. Ruth Shires was the wife of Daniel Donald McPherson referred to as "Kidnapped Daniel" not our Daniel 1700-1740 that was from Newport, Charles County, MD. Our Daniel was NOT the 1716 Jacobite and he was married to Elizabeth Nevitt.

Daniel's father was Alexander 1679-1761 and he was married to Elizabeth Johnson (approx. 1679-1722). She was from Charles County. The maiden name of Johnson shows up in court records. In addition "Sue Shanklin a descendant of Alexander Macpherson and his wife Elizabeth Johnson, uncovered a tax record showing Alexander was in Charles County by 1706, and in a court case deposition in July 1769, regarding a border dispute where Alexander states his name and age as being about 62-years old and having lived on his plantation for 45 or 46-years making it possible to determine his year of birth as circa 1679".

In Elizabeth Johnson's father's will it is noted that he passed along his land and plantation named Pomfreit Severn in which Alexander Jr., John and Richard were all executors.

Since there are no court documents detailing this transaction it is theorized that the inheritance was because Johnson's daughter, Elizabeth, was married to Alexander McPherson. It also might explain the son's name of "Johnson" aka "John".
