MR. HUGH MCPHERSON. OF MACLEAN. MACLEAN. Monday. Following a long illness extending over the past eight years, the death occurred at his residence in Taloumbi street, Maclean, to-day, of one of the most highly respected and well-liked residents of the district in the person of Mr. Hugh McPherson. The late Mr. McPherson had attained the age of 65 years, and although suffering greatly for the past few months, he endured his illness with a cheerfulness characteristic of the man. Born on the Orara River, deceased was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McPherson, who were among the early settlers on the Orara, where they occupied a tract of country near McPherson's Crossing in the 70's. When a youth, the late Mr. McPherson came with his parents to Woodford Leigh where they were engaged in farming pursuits. On leaving Woodford Leigh, deceased came to Maclean, where he married Miss Mary Bellamy, of South Grafton, daughter of the late Mr. Henry Bellamy, and Mrs. Bellamy, of Sydney. For a number of years the deceased worked for the N.C.S.N. Company, and was afterwards engaged in the fishing industry for some years. He was also employed on the Maclean-Ashby ferry service until failing health compelled him to retire. The illness which caused his death commenced eight years ago and for the past two years he had been practically an invalid. In addition to his widow, a grown up family also survive him comprising two sons and one daughter. The sons are Messrs. Stewart (Yamba) and Gordon (Maclean), Mrs W. Albert (Maclean) is the daughter. One brother, Ernest, and a sister, Mrs. M. McSwan, predeceased him some time ago. Surviving brothers are Messrs. John (Maclean), Clarence (Maclean), Alexander (Ballina) and Duncan (Lismore). The sisters are Mesdames J. B. Mackay (Maclean), S. Watts (Maclean), A. McLachlan (Harwood) and Miss Mary McPherson (of Sydney). The funeral will take place this Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Free Presbyterian Church, Maclean, for the Maclean cemetery. |
