Culpeper Classes, Jan. 1781

During its session begun in October 1780 the General Assembly passed an act designed to fill the state?s quota of troops for the Continental Army by drafting militiamen to serve for eighteen months. Culpeper County was required to supply 106 men. This was done by dividing the militia into 106 classes and drafting a man from each class by lot.

I, John Pierce, of the county of Culpeper and state of Virginia do by these presence authorize and empower my friend, Samuel McQueen of the county and state aforesaid for me and in my name to execute (so soon as a patent can be obtained therefore) a deed to Doctor Samuel Clagett for one hundred acres...it being the land I took up some time past a vacant land lying nearGrants Castle in the county and adjoining the land I have already conveyed to Doctor Samuel Clagett...and receive twenty-five pounds current money on the execution of the deed signed: John X Pierce.sealed & delivered in presences of R.Y. Wigginton, Thomas Yancey, Richard Norris, John Gaines, Jr. proved 19 December 1796
