Biography

Ethel was born in 1885. SHe married Charles Lewis Gregory in 1907. They were divorced in 1918

The Chief Justice heard an undefended petition for divorce lodged by Charles Lewis Gregory against his wife Ethel. Desertion was alleged. Mr P W Jackson appeared for the petitioner, who stated in his evidence that ...in October 1910 while living in Kowhai, his wife deserted him. She went into Whangarei and stated that she would return that afternoon. She did not return, but he received a letter from Auckland three days later. Respondent said she was going to Wellington, and would return to petitioner if he agreed to leave Kowhai. Petitioner promised to go to Auckland. He heard from his wife again in September when she wrote from Petone. Later still she asked for money. Petitioner wrote to the effect that he would pay for her train and steamer fares if she returned to him. There was no reply to that letter. He later heard that his wife had been in Auckland. Since then, he had not heard of her. A decree nisi was granted, to be made absolute in three months ^[1]
