Biography

Susan (McAlpin) Sutherland was born in Scotland.

Susan (McAlpin) Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Susan's birth was registered under the name of Elizabeth McAlpin. She was born on 16 September 1855 at 88 Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh which is the street just outside the famous Greyfriars Kirkyard. Her parents were William Muir McAlpin and Elizabeth Stewart.^[1].

Although she was born Elizabeth McAlpin, Elizabeth presumably being after her mother, she was known throughout her life as Susan Forbes McAlpin and then Susan Forbes Sutherland, after her marriage. Susan Forbes was the name of her maternal grandmother.

In the 1861 Scotland Census Susan is aged 5, and living with her parents and siblings at 88 Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh. This is where we pick up the middle name of Forbes. The census record names her as Susan Forbes Mcalpin - interestingly her middle name is not included on her marriage or death certificates.^[2] Candlemaker Row is at the heart of the Old Town of Edinburgh just next to the famous Greyfriars Kirkyard.

By 1871 the family are now living at 336 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh. Susan is said to be 15 years old and living with her parents and siblings.^[3]

On 16 February 1877 at 2 Wilkie Place, North Leith, Susan married James Briggs Sutherland^[4].

By 1881 Susan is 24 years old and has been married for 4 years. She is living with her husband and children at 38 Water Street, 2nd Floor, Leith South, Midlothian.^[5]

By 1891 Susan and her family are living at 16 Baltic Street, Leith.^[6]

By 1901 Susan now 44 years remains at 16 Baltic Street, Leith with her husband and children.^[7]

Susan died on 10 February 1902 at 16 Baltic Street, Leith at the age of 45. The writing on the certificate is difficult to read however it looks like the cause of death reads Pulmonary Infarction^[8].
