Research notes
According to family lore Hugh's wife was Elizabeth Burton, but nothing is known about her or her family. The McCrorys followed the Scots tradition of naming sons after fathers, brothers, uncles, etc, which can make things very confusing at times. These McCrorys were reputed to be of lowland Scots descent. Clan McCrory was destroyed in the Scottish Clan Wars afterwards becoming 'septs' of Clan Donald or Clan McLaren.
These Scots Irish McCrorys are not the same as the main body of McCrorys in Nortern Ireland who descend from an Irish King. There could well be a distant connection since Irish invaders known as the Scotti invaded or raided what is now Scotland. The name itself derives from these Irish invaders.
