Biography

Michael is believed to have been born around 1730. The exact date and location of birth are unknown. Michael was married to Elizabeth Hill or Steed and had the following children: John McGee, Moses McGee, and Michael McGee, Jr.. This information is based on the testimony of son John McGee in 1788. John had gone to Guilford County, North Carolina to recover the estate of his deceased half-brother, Jesse Steed. [1] John testified that Jesse Steed was the illegitimate child born to Elizabeth Steed prior to her marriage to Michael. [1] John stated that he, Michael McGee, and Moses McGee were the only children born to Michael and Elizabeth McGee. [1] “Moses died without issue,” and Michael (Jr.) “removed to South Carolina thirteen years earlier.” [1]

Michael McGee witnessed a deed between Anthony and William Head on Fishing Creek in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on 12 Nov 1753. [2] [3] He also witnessed a deed between Anthony and Isaac Head on the same date. [4] [5] Michael and his father William were named as chain carriers for a tract of land surveyed for Michael Dorman in Granville County, North Carolina on 19 Sep 1754. [6] This appears to be the same tract of land that Michael McGee purchased from Mitchell Dorman in 1760 (as noted below). Michael McGee was also named as a chain carrier for land surveyed for Charles Arenton (Harrington?) on 4 Jan 1757. [7]

There is an entry on page 5 of the 1755 Granville County, North Carolina Tax List that is difficult to read but appears to say "Michael Magee." [8] Michael is also found on the 1756 and 1757 tax lists for Granville County, North Carolina. [9] On 14 Aug 1760, Michael McGee purchased 252 acres of land on Peachtree Creek in Granville County (later Bute County), North Carolina from Mitchell Dorman. [10] Solomon McGee witnessed this deed. Michael and his wife Elizabeth sold this land to Samuel Hendley on 30 Sep 1765. [11] Michael McGee was named as a chain carrier for land surveyed for Drury Arington (Harrington) on 27 Jul 1761. [12] On 27 Apr 1767 Michael purchased land on the South side of Peachtree Creek from William Hill of Edgecombe County. [13] Michael sold this land to George Wren on 12 Jan 1771. [14]

According to the 1770 John Collet Map of North Carolina, Peachtree Creek is located close to the Bute and Edgecombe County boundary. Michael McGee and William McGee both owned land on Peachtree Creek. Solomon McGee and John Magee were living on Fishing Creek, just East of Peachtree Creek, in Edgecombe County. John Magee and Solomon McGee both had land transactions with Michael Dorman, who is believed to be the father of Mitchell Dorman.

Michael is listed on the Orange County tax list that was sent to the North Carolina General Assembly in 1779. [15] Michael McGee witnessed the will of Michael Synnott in Orange County, North Carolina on 1 Mar 1779, [16] and he was mentioned in an Orange County, North Carolina deed between James Cain and Thomas Sutton on 13 Apr 1782. [17]

Michael McGee was a surveyor's assistant or chain carrier for the grants surveyed on the following dates in Orange County, NC:

Research Notes

• Michael McGee was probably the son of William McGee who is first found in the Edgecombe Precinct in 1733 on Fishing Creek. Michael witnessed two land deeds there in 1753. Michael and William McGee are both found in Granville County records on Peachtree Creek in the 1750's and 1760's.

James McGee was probably not the son Michael and Elizabeth. John did not include him as part of his testimony in 1788, and James was not the same person as Moses McGee because John said Moses died without issue. [1] The profile for James states that he was born in Scotland in 1758.

• Y-DNA does not support William McGee being a son of William MackGehee of New Kent, Virginia as the Y-DNA of the descendants of both men do not match. There is no evidence of a McGehee relation.

• The land records in Lunenburg County, Virginia that are often associated with Michael McGee are actually for Michael McKie/Mackie who married Susannah Meriwether and later moved to the Edgefield/Newberry County, South Carolina area. [25]

Mcgee-1224 and McGee-1211 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly these are the same person, one with a Capital G and another with a lower case g

duplicate sons as well (G vs g)
