James McKinley died in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland on February 13, 1914, aged 76.
His obituary, February 20, 1914 - Northern Wigg;
We regret to announce the death, which occurred yesterday at 74 Willowbank Street of Mr James McKinlay, an employee of the Northern Whig of very old standing, whose kindly nature and genial disposition endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. Mr McKinley had reached the ripe old age of 76 years and during practically all his working career was identified with newspapers. He served his apprenticeship in Derry and Manchester and was a member of the Typographical Association since 1860. In the latter city he was employed on the “Guardian”. During the exciting times in Manchester which followed the execution of Allen, Larkin and O’Brien he was sworn as a special constable. Of this period of his career he had many interesting reminiscences with which he sometimes favoured his friends. Leaving Manchester, he returned to Derry and remained in that city for a few years. Upwards of forty-one years ago he joined the “Whig” as reader and served in that capacity until his health, which previously was customarily robust, broke down a few months ago. A painstaking and efficient worker, the late Mr McKinley was of a courteous and obliging disposition and his demise has been learned of with deep regret by hislarge circle of friends.
