Catherine McLachlan was born in Kilmylie/Kilmallie, Scotland, the daughter of Dugald McLachlan and Mary Ann Abercrombie Cleghorn.
She emigrated with her family on August 25 1840 from Clyde arriving in New Zealand with her family on December 27 at Kaiwarra on the ship 'Blenheim'.
In 1843 Catherine aged just 17, married William Bell Poppelwell, a Scottish Mariner, at the court house on Lambton Quay in Wellington. In 1845 they returned to Britain where their second daughter was born in 1846. On their return to New Zealand they settled at Milton in the Balclutha area and raised a large family of 12. Her home was well known for its hospitality and a centre for local Catholics.
Catherine died in 1900 age 74 and was buried on March 10 at Fairfax cemetery, Milton - BLOCK 5, PLOT 14,15
