Alexander was born in 1828 to parents Dugald McLachlan and Mary Ann Abercrombie Cleghorn.
He arrived in New Zealand on the ship 'Blenheim', at Port Nicholson, Wellington on December 27 1840, age 11 with his family, father Dugald, stepmother Jane, brothers Duncan age 4, Hugh age 10 and sisters Jane 13, Catherine 15. Catherine's occupation was listed as a domestic servant.
In 1861 Alexander met and married Mary Argyle Naysmith who arrived in New Zealand on the ship 'Duchess of Argyle'.
Alexander and his family settled in Thames in 1874 and he was employed as a Sawyer in the Shortland Mill. Nine children were born to Alexander and Mary.
In 1902 Alexander McLachlan passed away age 74 and is buried in Shortland Cemetery.
