Catherine was the daughter of John McLean, Mariner and Julia McPherson. She was baptised on 18 September 1841 at Duror, Argyll. [1]
Catherine, also known as Kate, emigrated to New Zealand before 1866 and settled in Dunedin.
She firstly married on 21 November 1866 at the Dunedin Registry Office to William Jackson Edwards.[2] Catherine and William were both 22 years old. John Brown and Allexander Brown, Fellmongers of Green Island stood as their witnesses.
Catherine McLean and William Jackson Edwards, a Miner, had 4 known children, Lydia, Duncan Thomas, William, and Catherine Annie (Mary Kisura) between 1867 and 1873.
William left New Zealand and headed to the Yukon goldfields and later returned to England. Catherine was left to raise her 4 children and reverted to her maiden name McLean, later remarrying in 1885 to George Hardie, farmer.[3]
Catherine had 1 child with George Hardie, a son named George Hardie in 1880. George Jr settled at Greenfields, Bruce, Otago and later moved to Tuapeka Mouth and married in 1908 to Mabel Jane Grieve.
Catherine and George settled in the Ida Valley where Catherine was licensed to operate a Hotel although the sign fixed to the wall was in George Hardie's name. George made an Application to occupy in 1891 which was transferred in 1901 to John Reilly.
By the early 1900's, Catherine and George had moved to Tuapeka in the Bruce district. She was widowed in 1908 when George passed away aged 74. George was buried at Tuapeka Mouth Cemetery.
Catherine and her son George attended the wedding of her granddaughter Myrtle Dundass to David Leishman in 1923.
Catherine died on 24 July 1928 aged 87 years at Dunedin. [4] Notably her death was registered in Motueka, Nelson possibly by family....
Catherine (McLean) Hardie may be buried at Omakau and Blacks Cemetery in the same plot as son Duncan Edwards.
