Godfrey was born in the Nelson district, the son of Elizabeth and John McNabb.[1] In 1891 he moved to Marlborough and the following year married Frances (nee Taylor) Robinson, a widow with 7 children.
[2] and three more children were born, Walter Clarence, William Godfrey and Roy Vivian. Godfrey purchased a farm in 1895 at Spring Creek in the Marshlands district and later he and Frances later moved to Crail Bay. He was connected with the local Oddfellows lodge and took a strong interest in sports. .He passed away in 1914 age 44 [3]
