Biography

Alan Mead was born on August 24, 1774 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. His parents were John Mead and Mary Brush.

He married Mary Smith on November 20, 1800. Together they had 9 children:

  2. Abigail Mead
  3. John Mead
  4. Mary Mead
  5. Elizabeth Mead
  6. Andrew Mead
  7. Adaline Mead
  8. Edward Mead
  9. Frances Mead

He died on December 20, 1856 in Walton, Delaware County, New York.

Numsell 1797-1880: The Town of Walton 'On West Brook the first settler we find after leaving point of the hill is Alan Mead, whom came in 1791, at the age of 17, with John Eells. ... Mr. Mead is mentioned elsewhere; several children survive him - John Mead, Mary A. Breesack, Gabriel S. Mead, Elizabeth McLaurey, Andrew J. Mead, Adaline S. Mead, Edward B. Mead, and Frances North." "Alan had the first shoe shop...before 1800, in connection with his tannery,"

Biographical Review - 1895 Section 5 pg 222: "General John Mead....married Mary Brush, who was of Scotch descent. They had nine children, and it is through their 2nd son and 6th child, Allen, that George O. Mead descended. Allen Mead, grandfather of George O., was born October 24, 1774 and came to Walton, from Ct about 1800...In 1800 he married Mary Smith, who was born in New Canaan, CT, in 1781, and to whom were born 9 children, all of 2 of whom married. "
