Biography

Michael Mead (Enos, Jonathan, John, John, William)

Michael Mead was born Feb 18 1758 in Milan, Dutchess County, Province of New York. [1] [2] He was a son of Enos Mead (1721 - >1774) and Millicent Meleanson (1724 - 1774). Note: Mother's maiden name is uncertain. His father was Enos Mead. [3]

Michael married Martha Potter (~1763 - ~1845). Martha (Potter) Mead was an Indian captive just prior to her marriage to Michael Mead. A French fur trader obtained her freedom by paying the Indians with a silver knee buckle. Michael amd Martha lived near Saratoga until about 1810 when they moved to German, New York. They spent a few years there then moved to near Utica,Tompkins County,New York where they lived for about ten years prior to moving to Ohio. [1] [2]

Occupation

Michael inherited land from his father in Charlotte Precinct, Dutchess Co, New York. Below is an excerpt from Enos Mead's Will, written December 19, 1774.

:I give and Devise to my Son Michael 100 acres of land being a part of the farm I live on Bounded Northerly by the line called Bushes line weft by Land of James Winans South by Lot No. 19 of the great division of the great nine partners or the line called Edsalls line and East by other land of mine So far east as to contain Eighty acres with a line parrallel with the west Side. I also give and Devise to my Said Son Michael as Much Land in Somerset Township in the County of Charlotte and of my right on the West Side of Delaware River, as I hereinbefore have given to my son Gideon, to be holden to my Said Son Michael his heirs and assigns.[4]

Death

Michael died in 1840 in New York aged ~82.
