The personal property tax records of Wythe County, Virginia suggest that Ebenezer was the eldest son of Thomas Meade, and that Ebenezer was born about 1783, two years after his parents' marriage.
From the earliest year (1793) through 1803, Thomas Mead was the only Mead in the Wythe County personal property tax records. The 1804 record, for the first time, showed two adult males, leading to the calculation that Thomas's eldest son was born about 1783 (age 21 in 1804), which fits nicely with Thomas's November 1781 marriage.
Thomas's personal property tax record also shows two adult males from 1805 through 1807. There was no tax in 1808, and in 1809 Thomas appears with only one male, but now Ebenezer Mead appears on the list, suggesting that Ebenezer was the extra adult male in Thomas's household starting in 1804. Ebenezer (and William) appears in 1810. They both disappear in 1811 (but Thomas is still there), and then William reappears (along with Thomas) in the 1813 record.
If this is correct, then it appears that Thomas Mead named his eldest son for a Revolutionary General, Ebenezer Mead of Connecticut, who was not a relative.
