Biography

Jonathan Mead (John, William)

Marriage to Martha Finch

S. P. Mead calls the wife of Jonathan Mead only "Mart______."[1] Her parents are identified by a deed filed by Samuel Finch in which he divides property between his four daughters, including a "Martha Mead." By process of elimination, this Martha seems by far the most likely.[2] Prindle is not alone; other genealogists have agreed in recent years.

Death Date, Correction 1712

S. P. Mead lists Jonathan's death as 1727.[1] Estate administrators were assigned for Jonathan Mead (John,William) on Feb 6, 1711/12. We know this is the identical Jonathan, because the names of two of his sons, James and Timothy, with their uncles, Benjamin and Ebenezer, were included in regards to custody arrangements.[2] Final distribution of the estate was not made until January, 1727/8, so this may have led to confusion about his date of death.[2]

Distribution of his estate was recorded on 27 January 1727/28 at Fairfield.[3]

Origin

Jonathan, the fifth child (fourth son), was born January 5, 1667 to parents John Mead and Hannah Potter.[4]

Family

Jonathan married about 1688 to Martha Finch.[1] They had nine children. After Jonathan's death, two of their children were still minors and were assigned guardians.[2]

Children:[1][4]

  1. Jonathan Mead Jr, b. 15 Sept 1689; m Sarah Huested
  2. Sarah Mead, b. Oct. 11, 1691; m. Jan. 21, 1714 to Jonathan Waterbury
  3. Martha Mead, b. Dec. 11, 1693, m. Stephen Holmes.
  4. James Mead, b. March. 11, 1696, d. Mch. 3, 1727; married, Jan. 25, 1720, Susannah Huested (b. 1696)
  5. Isaac Mead, b. Nov. 8, 1698.
  6. Timothy Mead, b. Apl. 22, 1701, removed to Nine Partners, Dutchess County, N. Y., and from thence to Vermont. He married, Feb. 28, 1723, 1st, Martha Weeks
  7. Mary Mead, b. May 22, 1704, m. Jan. 12, 1727 to Benjamin Waterbury.
  8. Hezekiah Mead, b. Aug. 30, 1705, probably settled in Westchester or Dutchess County, N. Y. No further record.
  9. Rachel Mead, b. Nov. 22, 1708.

Death and Burial

Estate administrators were assigned for Jonathan Mead (John,William) on Feb 6, 1711/12. We know this is the Jonathan because the names of two of his sons, James and Timothy, with their uncles, Benjamin and Ebenezer, are included in regards to custody arrangements.[2][4] He was certainly buried in Greenwich, CT, where he died.

Note: It was Jonathan's son, Jonathan (Jonathan, John, William), who removed to Nine Partners, (where he died).[1]

Research Notes

Spencer P. Mead published the much-used work, History and Genealogy of the Mead Family of Fairfield County, Connecticut ..., in 1901.[1] Unfortunately it does contain some errors, and often Mead guessed children's birth dates. Information should be confirmed with primary records.
