David Meade was a Virginia colonist.

DAVID MEADE 1710 - 1757

David Meade was born in 1710 in Nansemond County, Virginia, an area once named for the Native Americans who lived there, now part of the city of Suffolk. [1] David Meade's father Andrew was a trader from Ireland, trading with the Indians along the Roanoke River, through Virginia and North Carolina. Using slave labour, he developed the local lumber trade, becoming wealthy and building a fine family mansion for his family, and storehouses for his business. "The mansion stood on an eminence just back of the town of Suffolk and had an avenue of trees, which led from his home to the church in Suffolk, of which he was a vestryman." [2] The Meade's Mount Pleasant, Nansemond property was where the Nansemond River leaves Lake Meade in what is now downtown Suffolk. [3] an area sometimes referred to as Pitchkettle Creek [4] for the name of the creek which came almost up to the door of the Meade property and gave them access to the Nansemond River. The family home has not survived and the substantial Meade family graveyard at Nansemond suffered the indignity of being ploughed over by subsequent owners.

David Meade prospered on the old property, and sent his sons to England for their education. His son, also David Meade, wrote an autobiography named "The Chaumiere Papers" [5] in which he states that his father inherited the paternal estate and married Susannah Everard, an heiress, the daughter of Sir Richard Everard. He described his father as a handsome person of fine stature who lived a monotonous and tranquil life whose "purity of his heart corresponded with the symmetry of his person". He was the most affectionate of husbands, the tenderest of fathers and the best of masters, the most ingenuous and sincere friend.

"David Meade, some time before his marriage made an acquaintance with the family of Sir Richard Everard, who resided at Edenton, the then seat of government of North Carolina, where an attachment, perfectly romantic, was mutually formed between my father and the eldest daughter of Sir Richard; who, having relinquished his government [in 1731] Sir Richard Everard and his lady and two daughters became the guests [by invitation] of my grandfather Meade, he living convenient to Hampton Roads, where the ship lay, in which they had taken their passage to England. From some cause or other the ship was delayed longer than was expected [partly it is said on account of unfavorable winds] which delay proved favorable to my father's views, who had but little expectation of obtaining the parents' consent to his marriage with their daughter in Virginia, [he being only nineteen years old] and he was preparing to accompany the family to England, when the earnest entreaties of his father, who was distressed at the thought of being so long and so widely separated from his only son, prevailed upon the parents to consent to an immediate marriage. They, with the most entire confidence in his honor and affection, put their daughter under the protection of her enraptured lover. No pair ever enjoyed more happiness in the hymeneal state than they did. They were both of them very young when they came together, and with very little experience in mankind, brought up (as they were) under the eyes of fond and virtuous parents."

" David Meade had two daughters and five sons. His daughters were Anne, who married Richard Randolph, of Curles, and Mary, who married Colonel Walker, each of them leaving many children, who are scattered over the land. The sons were David Meade, who inherited the estate in Nansemond, married a Miss Waters, of Williamsburg, then settled in Macox, in Prince George, then removed to Kentucky, devoting his time and fortune to the improvement of the seats on which he lived, and which were celebrated all over Virginia and Kentucky. The others were R.K. Meade, aid to General Washington, and Everard Meade, aid to General Lincoln and afterward raised to the rank of General. Andrew Meade, who settled in Brunswick, and John, who died in his youth. The three elder children were sent to England for their education, and placed under the care of Dr. Thackery, the principal of Harrow School, and Archdeacon of Surrey."

Lincoln m.1st Mary Thornton & 2nd Mrs.Mary Ward, widow nee Eggleston; 4. Andrew m.Susanna Stith of Brunswick Co.; 5. John who died in his youth; 6. Anne m. Richard Randolph of Curies; 7. Mary m. Con. Research Notes

D C O'Driscoll says David Meade was born Nansemond, Virginia, 1710^[2]. However, this conflicts with his parents Andrew Meade & Mary Latham marrying in New York before settling at Nansemond River^[3].

Stith Slave Transactions

I received some very valuable information from Wayne Stith concerning the transfer of slaves from members of the Stith families to individuals.

inquiry re the given name Annaka. "I saw it listed as the name of one of the Stith slaves. Annaka Sanco and Ferdinando stood out enough for me to wonder if they were of some race other than African. According to the responses that I received the name could be anything from Ann aka (also known as) to Norweigan. So now I am wondering about Sanco. All of this wondering is in keeping with the Melungeon theory of "Portuguese "settles predating the settlers of Jamestown and other colonies. Are Sanco, Ferdinando and Annaka Portuguese?"
