Biography

Jehu Meador was born in 1762 in Bedford County, Virginia. He was the son of John Meador and Jane Holloway.

Jehu married Nancy Wright 2 September 1793 in Bedford Co., VA. Nancy was the daughter of Joseph Wright of Bedford County.

Jehu and Nancy left Bedford and moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky in 1799-1800. They were living on Beech Fork of Clover Creek, located about halfway between Cloverport (on the Ohio River) and Hardinsburg. Breckinridge Co. formed in 1800 from Hardin Co. Jehu died in Breckinridge Co. about 1807. Nancy and the children stayed there for a couple years but returned to Bedford Co., VA by 1812, when her son, Jubal, was bound by the Overseer’s of the Poor to James Mayse (Nancy’s brother-in-law). Nancy died in Bedford Co., probably in the fall of 1814, as she is named as “deceased” in the will of her father dated 31 February 1815. Her children were then assigned guardians and appear in some of the estate proceeding for their grandfather, Joseph Wright. By the late 1820’s, all the children had migrated to KY and TN.

When Nancy left Kentucky, she apparently did not sell the land owned by Jehu. According to Victor Paul Meador, the land was still in Jehu’s name in 1816, and in Jubal Meador’s name from 1820-1826, before being sold in 1828.

Children of Jehu Meador and Nancy Wright:
1. Jane (Ginny, Jenny, Jinny) Meador, born c. 1795 Bedford Co., had John Turner as guardian, married 17 September 1818 Bedford Co. to John Meador, a son of Joseph Meador and grandson of Joel Meador, Sr. Moved to Sumner Co., TN by 1829.
2. Jubal W. Meador, born c. 1799-1800 Bedford or Breckinridge Co., KY, had James Mayse as guardian in Bedford Co. (brother-in-law of Nancy Wright Meador). Moved to Sumner Co., TN by 1829.
3. Joseph Meador, born c. 1802 Breckinridge Co., KY, had Thomas Wright of Bedford Co. as guardian (brother of Nancy), married 1828 Nancy Jane Rhoads, daughter of Moses Rhoads, in Sumner Co., TN. She was born c. 1813 in Smith Co., TN.
4. Judith Meador, born c. 1800-1805 Breckinridge Co., KY, had Matthew Wright as guardian in Bedford Co., married Bennett Meador, son of Joel Meador, Jr. and grandson of Joel Meador, Sr. Moved to Sumner Co., TN by 1829. He was born c. 1797 Franklin Co. and died in Macon Co., TN.
5. John H. Meador, born c. 1800-1805 Breckinridge Co., KY, guardian either Matthew Wright or Thomas Wright (Nancy’s brothers). Living in Allen Co., KY in 1829. Probably the John Meador in 1830 census in Smith Co., TN and 1840 census in Sumner Co., TN.

Jehu died about 1807, based on tax records of Breckinridge Co. The date may be sometime between 15 April 1807 and 2 July 1808.
