Jeptha Moore Meador was born on the plantation of his father in Franklin County, Virginia on Indian Creek. It has been said that his middle name,Moore, came from his mother's maiden name, but no such evidence has beenfound. His marriage to Sally Hire was recorded in Bedford County, VA (just across the Staunton River) where the Hire family lived.
Jeptha probably accompanied his parents on their move to Smith County, TN (now Macon County) in 1809. On December 14, 1810 he purchased 100 acreson the east side of Long Creek from James Gwin, near that of his fatherand adjoining the lands of Ira M. Meador on the north (See Smith County,TN Deed Book D, page 15) This land was sold to Rene (Rainy) Meador onDecember 1, 1814 (See Deed Book E, page 199), in which deed he termedhimself as a resident of Sumner County, TN. On June 11, 1814 hepurchased an additional 108 acres from John Gwin at the head of Strader'sBranch of the West Fork of Drake's Creek in Sumner County, TN (Deed Book9, page 324). This land was sold on October 28, 1828 to William Meador,the son of Isham Meador (Deed Book 13, page 247). This last sale appears to have been about the time he followed other family members to MarionCounty, IL where he settled in Section 14.

Jeptha Moore Meador was a farmer, blacksmith, and a minister of theMethodist Episcopal Church. He was one of the founders of the MeadorCemetery in Marion County, IL, two miles east of Vernon. He and his wifeand many of their children are buried there. These include at least FredIredill, and his wife Tabitha; Matthew and his wife Sarah; Elias,Granville and his family; Simeon and family; and Simeon's two wives, andmany descendants.
Jepthie and Sarah (Hier) Meador, the former having been born May 8, 1787, near Richmond, Virginia, and the latter born in 1791, also in Virginia, both being representatives of old southern families. They came to Marion county, Illinois, in 1829, and settled on the place where the subject now lives. (Simeon W Meador) The subject's father entered one hundred and sixty acres, and his wife forty acres of land, later purchasing some land from the Illinois Central Railroad Company. Jepthie Meador was a blacksmith and local preacher as well as a farmer, and he was a man who exercised great good in his community. He conducted his shop on his farm for the accommodation of his neighbors
