Biography

Jeptha Moore Meador was born on the plantation of his father in Franklin County, Virginia on Indian Creek. It has been said that his middle name,Moore, came from his mother's maiden name, but no such evidence has beenfound. His marriage to Sally Hire was recorded in Bedford County, VA (just across the Staunton River) where the Hire family lived.

Jeptha probably accompanied his parents on their move to Smith County, TN (now Macon County) in 1809. On December 14, 1810 he purchased 100 acreson the east side of Long Creek from James Gwin, near that of his fatherand adjoining the lands of Ira M. Meador on the north (See Smith County,TN Deed Book D, page 15) This land was sold to Rene (Rainy) Meador onDecember 1, 1814 (See Deed Book E, page 199), in which deed he termedhimself as a resident of Sumner County, TN. On June 11, 1814 hepurchased an additional 108 acres from John Gwin at the head of Strader'sBranch of the West Fork of Drake's Creek in Sumner County, TN (Deed Book9, page 324). This land was sold on October 28, 1828 to William Meador, the son of Isham Meador (Deed Book 13, page 247). This last sale appears to have been about the time he followed other family members to MarionCounty, IL where he settled in Section 14.

Jeptha Meador was one of the first settlers to what is now; Patoka Township. Patoka Township is located in Marion County, Illinois, Jeptha migrated west from virginia to Ill. And finally to Patoka area in 1829 (circa). Jeptha was a pastor and a blacksmith. Jeptha was one of the founders of Meador Cemetery.
