Biography

John Meador, Jr. was born in 1760 in Cumberland County, Virginia. He was the son of John Meador and Jane Holloway.

As a general note, John Meador, Jr. had a younger brother, usually referred to as Jehu Meador, born in 1764. Both men were named in the 1824 will of their father, who is sometimes found in records as "John Jehu Meador". And both brothers married women named Nancy. In exploring records for these two brothers, it is not uncommon to find John referred to as "Jehu" and Jehu referred to as "John". Part of the confusion may be due to handwriting differences as the two names are very similar in script form. Part of the confusion may be due to county officials confusion over which brother was involved in a particular transaction. Some researchers have incorrectly assumed that one man married both Nancy's but the 1824 will of their father clearly identifies the two brothers. It is possible to separate the records for these brothers based on their wives/children and land records, but the reader should be aware that confusion is possible.

John married Nancy Board in 1796 in Bedford Co. She was the daughter of Capt. John Board and Jane Harwood. The Board's were close neighbors of the Meador's along Molly Day's Run. Within a few years of the marriage, John settled on Jumping Run, another creek in southern Bedford flowing into Staunton River. Around 1810, John moved his family into Franklin Co. and lived the rest of his life of land on or near Camping Run, now known as Little Linville Creek.

In 1818, John acquired a lot in the newly established town of Lawrence, located near Hales Ford in Franklin Co. The town was in existence until 1832 and is now under the water of Smith Mountain Lake. This property was mentioned in John's will.

Nancy Board Meador probably died 1830-1833 since John Meador married secondly in 1833, to Phebe J. Crews. John and Phebe had three children before John died. Phebe remained in Franklin Co. for many years and she remarried to Pleasant Baker.

Apparently, all of the executors named in the will of “Jehu” Meador refused to qualify for administration. That lead to the estate being administered by the Franklin Co. sheriff, George Turner. There is a large group of documents available at the Library of Virginia pertaining to Meador’s estate. But those records are somewhat confusing:

There is a chancery court record (Franklin Co. Case #1845-045) labeled for Abel B. Meador ETC vs. Admr. of Jesse Meador ETC. This label is incorrect. Somehow, the name “Jehu” was interpreted as Jesse and used in indexing. There was no Jesse Meador involved. Also, this same case contains no images, but instead refers the reader to a different case, Franklin Co. # 1866-024, which is labeled for Peter Saunders, Jr. vs. John Jones ETC. The two case files are intermingled because a land dispute between Saunders and Jones also involved John J. Meador (same as “Jehu”). This second case file contains 137 images and great detail on the estate of Jehu. Case # 1866-024 was active between 8 November 1841 and 18 October 1845. The legatees of Jehu Meador were named as: Abel B. Meador, Elijah McGuire and Lucinda his wife formerly Lucinda Meador, William Kemp and Susan his wife formerly Susan Meador, Henry Dowdy and Margaret his wife formerly Margaret Meador, Joel McGuire and Jemima his wife formerly Jemima Meador, Paschal Meador, John J. Meador, Charlotte Albright, John Q. Albright, Elizabeth Albright, and Susan Albright (the last four being infants of William Albright and his deceased wife Jane Albright formerly Jane Meador), Phebe Meador, Andre Osse T. Meador, Joan Berosa Meador and Marshall Meador.

Meador-87 and Meador-750 appear to represent the same person because: Both men died at approximately the same time. Given names are confusing as John Meador and Jane Holloway had sons John and Jehu. One of these sons wrote his will in 1838, amended it in 1838 and 1840, and had it proved in court 6 July 1844. The two profiles represent the same man.

Oops! My apologies! I have obviously confused John Meador and Jehu Meador, sons of Jonas, with John Meador and Jehu Meador, sons of John.

Meador-750 and Meador-87 do not represent the same person because: John and Jehu are different people, not the same person. Both John and Jehu are named (as separate persons) in their father Jonas' will, and also both are named (as separate persons) in their mother Frances' will.

Meador-87 and Meador-750 appear to represent the same person because: the first names of these two men are often confused. John Meador had a brother Jehu. "Jehu" Meador wrote his will in 1840; it was proven 6 July 1844 in Franklin Co. But almost all records for this man use "John". He married Nancy Board first and Phebe Crews second. The two profiles address the same man.

Meador-196 and Meador-87 appear to represent the same person because: birth and death are the same
