He was a surveyor and rode horses all over the hills of Kentucky. That is how he found and got his land. He was an Irishman. He was a hardworker. He drank "white lightening" and kept a jug under the bed for his drink every morning. He called it his "medicine". He used a corn-cobb pipe for a stopper to the bottle of "shine". He died at 57 years of age of what was then called heart dropsy which is now known to be diabetes and its side effects. But, it is believed by the family to be kidney failure related to the diabetes. He was bed ridden for the last 7 to 8 years of his life with this illness.
