Biography

Isabella's son, William, and grandson, John, lived in the area around Chillicothe, and grandson, Thomas, near Greenfield, Ohio. Her sons, Benjamin and Hamilton are also buried in this cemetery, and are linked to this memorial site.

ISABELLA MEANS (may be found as MARY MAINS, but possibly his first wife instead)(maybe a coincidence but the name MAINS could be related to a Castle Mains in Scotland, located near Ardeonaig on Loch Tay's south shore, as it is near the Castle Menzies, the clan home to the MEANS family as they are a sept of the MENZIES clan)

Wife of Hamilton Rodgers, son of William Rodgers and Jean (sometimes found as Jane) Hamilton, both who immigrated from the Rathmore area, at the northeast side of Antrim, County Antrim, N. Ireland in 1729.

The name has been spelled Isabelle Means (LDS), Mary Mains (Mcllany in "Some Virginia Families"), Isabella Mary Means (Rootsweb), Isabell (autobiography of Thomas Rogers, her grandson), and Isabella (as spelled by Herb Rodgers, family researcher and cousin). Her daughter may have been spelled, Esabella.

Isabella is the wife of Hamilton Rodgers. His name is also found as spelled without the D, however the D is most common in older records in N. Ireland for this family. Hamilton is likely buried in the Union Cemetery (Pleasant Valley), Ross County, Ohio near Chillicothe, and a FAG memorial is there for him. He died in 1805, and she lived ten more years during which time lived with one of her sons, Benjamin or Hamilton. Thus, most likely the reason she is buried with them in this cemetery.

Isabella was born in 1728 in Tinicum Twp, Bucks County, PA. She grew up in Bucks Cty, then they moved to about three miles east of Leesburg, Loudoun County, VA. They then moved with his Rodgers/Rogers family to near Paris, KY, then to here in Ohio along with several children; William, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Hamilton, Joseph, Esabella, Jane Margaret, Benjamin, Nathaniel, and Lewis.

There is a Rodgers/Rogers Cemetery across the highway from the Rodgers/Rogers McElwain Cemetery, where more related Rodgers families are buried. At this time in history this family was most often spelled Rodgers. The name was spelled as Rodgers back in the "old country", near Antrim, in County Antrim, N. Ireland. However, this family likely migrated from Scotland, England, and Wales, where the name could very likely have been Rodgers/Rodger or Rogers/Roger or even Rosser/Prosser and Roget after migrating over from northern France likely sometime after year 1066.
