Clement VII was born Giulio di Giuliano de' Medici 1478. His father Giuliano de' Medici, brother to Lorenzo the Magnificent, was assassinated by the Pazzi family.
During his time as Pope, Rome was sacked by Spanish and German troops on May 6th, 1527.[1]
Modern scholarship believes he fathered an illegitimate son, Alessandro "il Moro" de' Medici, Duke of Florence, by Simonetta da Collevecchio. Alessandro, however, was recognized as the only son of Lorenzo II de' Medici.[2][3]
Today, "the greater majority of the noble houses of Italy can today trace their ancestry back to Alessandro de Medici," including the Hapsburgs, and a, "number of other princely families of Europe."[3]
Volume 12 - Calendar of Papal letters to Scotland of Clement VII of Avignon, 1378-1394 - Series 4 - National Library of Scotland (nls.uk) details Pope Clement VII’s letters about Scotland.
Simonetta da Collevecchio. Issue:[2] Alessandro de' Medici, Duke of Florence[2][4]
