Biography

Marguerite Melanson was born in 1676 in Grand-Pré, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Pierre Melanson (abt. 1632–aft. 1714) and Marguerite Mius (abt. 1650–aft. 1713).

In 1686, at Baye des Mines, Marguerite, aged 10, was living with her parents, Pierre MELANCON, dit La Verdure [sic], aged 54, and Marie MIUS DAUTREMON [sic], aged 36, and her eight siblings: Philippes [sic], aged 20, Cecile, aged 18, Pierre, aged 16, Marie, aged 13, Isabelle [sic], aged 7, Jean, aged 5, Magdeleine, aged 2, and a child 1 day old. They owned 12 guns and were living on 50 arpents of cultivable land with 31 cattle, 8 sheep, and 27 hogs.[1]

Marguerite (17) married Alexandre (Bourg) Bourg dit Bellehumeur (22) (born in 1671 in Port-Royal, Acadie; son of François Bourg and Marguerite Boudrot) about 1694 in Grand-Pré. Their known children were:

Research Notes

In the original 1686 census at Baye des Mines, Melanson was spelled Melancon, Laverdure was spelled la Verdure and transcribed La Verdure, d'Entrement was spelled Dautremon, Philippe was spelled Phillipes, Elisabeth was written Isabelle, Magdeleine was spelled Magdelaine, and Anne was the unnamed one day old child.[2]
