Biography

John Quincy Melton was born in Tennessee in June of 1838. John Melton is listed on the 1850 Census in the household of his father, William Melton and most likely his stepmother Nancy Melton in McNairy, Tennessee and according to that census he had at least eight siblings. [1] He married Ellender "Ellen" Catherine Young on October 4, 1860 in Tennessee [2] and served in the 51st Tennessee Infantry during the Civil War. [3] John and Ellen are listed together on the 1880 Census in Prentiss, Mississippi and based on the data it provides it is believed that they had at least six children. [4] He passed away in 1898 at the age of 59 in the same area of Prentiss, Mississippi. [5]
