Although his father's death in 1178 puts Richard's birth no later than nine month after that event, it is recorded that he accompanied King WIliam the lion on an expedition into England in 1174. His age at that time is not given and one might presume he was of full age, but men as young as 16 would do battle so a conservative approach is to merely say that Richard was born before 1158
