Johann (who later took the name 'Gregor') was born on 20 July 1822 in Hyncice, Northern Moravia, Austrian Silesia to Anton Mendel and Rosine Schwirtlich.[1][2]
He was given the name Johann at baptism, but assumed the name Gregor when he became an Augustinian monk.[1]

Gregor (Johann) Mendel's ancestry was published in the Zeitschrift für Sudetendeutsch Familienforschung in the late 1920s, by a near relative (nephew or grandnephew), Dr. Schindler. The relevant church records are available online from the Opava Archive in the Czech Republic.
