  • Note 1. In 1717 Abraham and Anna Veronica Merkle sailed with their children from Germany for America. One presumes Anna Veronica and two children died at sea, since they do not appear in later records.
The name of Benjamin Frey's wife has been presented many ways, as "Anna Christena", "Christena Anne", "Christian", etc. Benjamin Frey names his wife in his Will as "beloved wife Cristen". Simply understood, she was born Regina Christine, but when married became Cristen Frey.
  • Note 2. Until the "hidden hand" of Abraham Merkle is seen, it is hard to understand how a sister of Anna Maria Hite in Bonfeld, Germany could become the wife of Benjamin Frey in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. How could Regina Christine Merkle, or her brother Jacob Merkle for that matter, sail to America, be supported by a family, and appear eligible for marriage?
Abraham Merkle had to act quickly to bring his teenage children to America as a family group and establish residence near the Hite family and Germantown in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. If he could do that, there would be no question that Veronika, Christen and Jacob Merkle were his children. Then, perhaps, a true master could weave the magic of his family into this vast and remote New World — the beautiful fabric of America. And weave he did!

Hank Adams thinks Benjamin's wife may have been a sister to the wife of Jost Hite, and he is absolutely right. Found in an upright file in the Montgomery County (originally Philadelphia County) PA Historical Society are records of the Merkle/Markley family which contain the birth of a daughter Regina Christena on 20 Mar 1699. There was also an older sister, Anna Maria, born 16 Jan 1687 - she married Justus Heydt [Jost Hite] on 11 Nov 1704.

Benjamin Frey lived adjacent to the Hites in the Falkner Swamp Area, as well as next to Jacob Merkle aka Markley, brother of these two sisters. The parents of Jacob, Christen & Anna Maria were Abraham & Anna Veronica Merkle. The choice of the name Abraham for the first son of Benjamin & Christen suggests the son was named to honor her father. They apparently named their first daughter, Christena Anna Frey after the mother, Regina Christine "Christen" Merkle and the grandmother, Anna Veronica.
