Ernest Harley was born in Muswellbrook district 1918 the son of Harley Merrick and Vergie Oxford. He died at Forbes in 2003 aged 85 years. Married in 1945 at Mulbring NSW to Georgina CLIFTON. Ernest joined the police force after he married and the couple lived in many towns in the course of his career.

ERNEST HARLEY MERRICK SECOND CLASS REGISTERED NO 4899 All members of the NSW Police are advised of the death of the former Inspector Second Class Ernest Harley Merrick aged 85 years, who passed away on Saturday 19 July 2003. Records indicate that Mr Merrick retired from the NSW police on the 29th April 1978 and was performing duties at Forbes police station at the time of his retirement. A funeral service will be held at the Uniting Church, Forbes at 11am on Tuesday 22 JUly 2003. Police from the Lachlan LAC will provide a guard of honour at the funeral, which will be organised by the police force from Forbes police station.
