Fred Merrick was born October 22, 1874, the son of Jacob Lady Merrick and Irene Merrick Holt. Irene Merrick Holt was 1/2 Cherokee Indian. Fred was only 3 years and 10 months old when his mother died. He spent a lot of his youth at his Grandparents, ( John and Dianna Merrick ) home. He attended school in Lyon County. He was a tall, slim man.
On February 5, 1899 he married Ella Merrick, daughter of Ezekiel and Pernecie Childress Merrick. Fred and Ella had a total of 12 children. Eight children lived to adulthood, Kate, Minnie, Harper, Morris, Huell, Robert, Edna and Fred Jr.
Fred and Ella lived most of their married live in Trigg County near the Rocky Ridge Community. Fred was a farmer all his life. He raised corn, tobacco, hogs, cattle and sheep at one time. He also raised turkeys and chickens. He sold eggs and took cream to sell in Cadiz. He also sold milk that a truck came to get to take to Hopkinsville. Fred's grandson Dennis said his grandfather grew the best watermelons and doesn't eat watermelons anymore because they don't taste like Fred's.
Fred never learned to drive. The only time he ever drove a tractor was once to help his son Huell get the tractor back to the house from the field. Huell bought a farm in Trigg County so that his elderly parents would have a home. Fred was a sharecropper and the owners were about to sell the farm where they lived.
Fred went to Oklahoma in the early 1900's to stay with John Henry Merrick during the Nightrider Era. He was being threatened by the Nightriders and had to leave his wife and young children.
Fred and his boys brought hoes and rakes each year to help clean off the Merrick Cem.. The graveyard cleaning was held the 3rd Saturday in July of each year.
Fred died on July 21, 1962
