Biography

Jesse Merrill/Merrell was a farmer.

Jesse married Martha Pugh May (1798 - 1881) in 1818 in Randolph Co., NC. Some of Jesse and Martha's children:

  1. Elizabeth Ann (Merrill) Hill (1819 - 1881) b. 4 Dec. 1819, Randolph Co., NC; she married Hanks Neville Hill.
  2. Jane (Merrill) Young (1822 - 1894) b. 1824, Randolph Co., NC; she married Robert Young.
  3. Melissa A (Merrill) Swain (1830 - 1905) b. May 1830, Randolph Co., NC, d. June 20, 1905, Red River Co., TX. She married RUEBEN P. SWAIN on April 1846 in McNairy Co., TN. She's buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Woodland, Red River Co., TX.
  4. George Arthur Merrill (1835 - 1886) b. 1835, TN
  5. Elma B. (Merrell) Carothers (1837 - 1896) b. 1838, TN

[1]: "Jesse Merrill became one of the pioneer settlers of McNairy Co., TN where many of his descendants now live. Jesse's old house is located one and one-half miles north of Adamsville, TN. During the winter of 1845-46, Jesse was called back to North Carolina to claim his share of his father's estate and he made the trip on horseback. During his return he was caught in a blizzard and his feet were frostbitten. He stopped at the home of an Indian woman who applied poultieces made of Indian turnips, within a few days, Jesse was able to resume his journey".

Jesse's name is on the monument at the Selmer, TN Courthouse: "This monument is erected in affectionate memory of the early settlers of McNairy County and the town of Purdy by some of their descendants. A.D. 1903."

Sibling: Lytle Merrell (1784 - 1834)

Adamsville is named after George D. Adams, who operated an inn and stagecoach stop in the 1840s. Adamsville's nickname is the "Biggest Little Town in Tennessee" and was the home of Sheriff Buford Pusser.

Merrill-2148 and Merrell-252 appear to represent the same person because: clearly the same person "Jessa" is a typo for "Jesse" with same birth & death years and same parents and same family.

Please confer between profile managers to decide if MERRILL or MERRELL is the preferred surname spelling. Merrill is the wider-used alternative but each family is unique. Merrill seems to have been used by his father.... Then, Please put the "other" spelling in the "Other Last Names" field - for WikiTree's INDEX.
