Samuel Merrill was an American merchant, banker, soldier and politician. Merrill was a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. Merrill was the 7th Governor of the State of Iowa.
Civil War
On August 1, 1862, Samuel Merrill was appointed Colonel in command of the 21st Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. On May 17, 1863, Colonel Merritt was severely wounded at the Battle of Big Black River Bridge. Colonel Merritt was discharge on June 21, 1864. [1][2]
