Timothy Merrill, the son of William Merrill and Sally Haden was born on 30 April 1778 in Goochland County, Virginia. He was baptized on 27 November 1784 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia.[1]

Timothy Merrill found in the 1830 Carroll Co TN census with a female age 60-70, presumably his mother, living in the household. He was still there in 1840, but there was no older woman. Timothy, age 72, found in the 1850 Census in Fannin Co TX living with Alexander F. Merrill, grandson. Timothy's son Wiley B. Merrill was head of the adjacent household. Timothy's age did agree with that of his birth record from Virginia. Biographies of two of the sons of Wiley B. were found in "Biographical Souvenir of Texas" which gave a great deal more information about Timothy's family. Kay Haden

Timothy Merrill and Elizabeth "Betsy" BRADSHAW were married on 30 November 1801 in Rowan County, North Carolina.[15][16] Elizabeth "Betsy" BRADSHAW, daughter of Robert BRADSHAW and Mary BRADSHAW, was born (date unknown).[17]

Timothy Merrill and Elizabeth "Betsy" BRADSHAW had the following children:

  1. Wiley B. MERRILL[18][19][20] was born in 1804 in Sumner County, Tennessee. He died on 30 May 1852 at the age of 48 in Fannin County, Texas.[21][22]

  3. William MERRILL was born about 1808.[26] He died about 1838 at the age of 30 in Carroll County, Tennessee.[27][28]

Wiley B. MERRILL

Wiley B. MERRILL[59][60][61] was born in 1804 in Sumner County, Tennessee. He died on 30 May 1852 at the age of 48 in Fannin County, Texas.[62][63]

Wiley B. was reared mainly in Warren Co KY. He married at age 24, on 15 Jul 1828, to Martha A. Hilliard, daughter of Wrightman Hilliard, from Wake Co NC and settled in Carroll Co TN at an early day. The family lived in TN, MS, and AR crossing the Red River into Texas on Jan 7th of 1837.[64]

1850, Fannin Co TX Census W. B. Merrill age 45, b. TN. M. A. Merrill age 36, b. NC. Geo. W. age 21, b. TN. A. F. 19 and Elizabeth F. age 18, also both b. TN. B. H. age 13, b. MS [1837]. Mary age 12 b. TX as were all the children following. R. L. age 11, W. B. age 3, and a 4 month old infant marked "not named".[65]

1860, Fannin Co TX. M. A. Merrill age 45, b. NC. G. W. age 30, Alex F. age 28 and Benj. F age 24, all born in Tennessee. Mary 19, Wiley B. 13, Quincy H. age 10 and James B. age 7 all born in Texas.[66]

This would account for Wiley's children as listed in 'BIOGRAPHICAL SOUVENIR OF TEXAS" George W. Merrill, eldest of eleven. Alexander F., Elizabeth F., Benjamin H., Mary M., Rusey L., Martha J., Amanda, Wiley B., Quincy H. and James B. [Martha J. & Amanda apparently died as infants or small children since they do not appear in the 1850 census.[67]

1880 Fannin Co TX. J. B. Merrell, age 27, b. TN. His father b. TN, his mother b. NC. Bell age 17, b. MS. [Not named as wife, occupation as Domestic] Mary age 41, Sister, b. TN and marked as "Idiotic". M. A. age 67, Mother, b. NC as were both her parents.[68]

The 1890 Texas State Directory lists the following who appear to be sons of Wiley in Fannin Co: W. B. Merrell, farms 360 acres, P.O.-Ladonia B. Merrill [Benjamin?] 110 acres, P.O.-Ladonia. J. B. Merrill [James?] 272 acres Q. H. Merrill [Quincy] 133 acres.[69]

I am a descendant of Timothy Merrill, through his son Alexander F. Merrill b 1823. On your tree, you mention that Timothy Merrill is found in the household of Alex F. Merrill. You list AF as his grandson. He is living with his son Alex F Merrill not his grandson with the same name. You are correct in listing the younger AF Merrill (b 1831) in the Biograhical Souvenir Sketch, he was a young boy when his father Wiley B Merrill came to TX. Thus these two were a part of the early Republic of TX. The older Alexander F. Merrill married his first wife in 1845, Francis Havens and was in TX prior to that time. Different resources list his arrival in TX after 1837. His mother Elizabeth Bradshaw Merrill died in 1848 in Carroll Co, TN and Timothy then permanently migrated to TX. Timothy died in 1857 in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. I am on ancestry.com with our family tree. I would very much like to exchange information.

Next door to my husband's William Franklin Haden and family and his daughter Sarah & her husband Sydney Hudson in the 1870 census was a young family. This is the first census that this Haden family was in Texas, having come from Missouri at the end of the Civil War. My husband's grandfather, his father, and himself, would all be born in this same little Texas town, Ladonia.

1870 Census, Precinct #3, Fannin Co, TX, p.249 Hh 178 Willy B. Merrill, age 23, b. Texas. Ellen, 23, b. KY Willy, age 3, b. TX Haden, age 3 months, b. TX

Since the baby was named Haden, when I first found this years ago, I tried to figure out who Ellen might have been - thinking she was another member of William F.'s family from Kentucky especially since she was born there but could never place her. After our correspondence, the Merrill name suddenly became significant. I was able to trace Wiley Brandon Merrill, b. 1847, Fannin Co TX, d. 1922, still in Fannin Co, back through his parents, Wiley B. Merrill and Martha Ann Hilliard, to his grandparents Timothy Merrill & Elizabeth "Betsy" Bradshaw. Timothy was an older brother to your Mary "Polly" who married Peter Cowan. The first Wiley and his wife were both residents of the Republic of Texas before statehood - in fact for proving that he had arrived before Indipendence, Wiley was entitled to 1280 acres of land which he received.

So the young 23-year-old Wiley was a 4th cousin to the young Hadens living next door to him. The families had divided in the 1760's when the two Haden brothers, William & Joseph, left Virginia for North Carolina. Could they possibly have suspected a kinship? Or did they just name the baby "Haden" out of respect for their neighbors? Oh, and Ellen was Ellen J. Booth - they married 20 Sep 1866, Fannin Co - her death certificate lists her father as J. W. Booth, born in Alabama; her mother as Eliza Newman, born in South Carolina.

Re Timothy Merrill & Elizabeth Bradshaw's daughters. I have that Nancy married James R. Horton and died in 1910, but that is obviously wrong. It was her sister Mary E. who married Horton, etc. ...and they ended up in Texas, too. Here's an obit:
