Biography

Deborah Merritt was born in December, 1689, at Scituate, Plymouth Colony, the daughter of John Merritt & Elizabeth Pinson. (Scituate Vitals, Vol. 1, pg. 253.) She has been confused with her cousin, Deborah Merritt, daughter of Henry, b. the 2nd of March, 1694-95. (Scituate Vitals, Vol. 1, pg. 253.) However, both John & Henry have administrations of their estates. In John's 1740 administration, Deborah Hatch is mentioned in the division of the estate. (Plymouth Probate Records. Attached.) In Henry's 1732 administration, no Deborah is mentioned, while other daughters were. (Plymouth Probate Records. Attached in Henry's profile.) Henry's Deborah, was probably deceased.

Deborah married Jeremiah Hatch III, at Scituate, the 11th of May, 1721. (Scituate Vitals, Vol. 2, pg. 203. Attached image.) Their known children have their baptisms recorded at Scituate:

  • Deborah Hatch, baptized the 4th of November, 1722, at the 2nd Church of Scituate
  • Jeremiah Hatch IV, baptized the 27th of June, 1725, at the 2nd Church of Scituate [1]

In 1728, she was appointed guardian to her son Jeremiah.[2]

Deborah is mentioned in the 1725 Will of Jeremiah Hatch Jr. & in a 1729 court case settling the estate of Jeremiah Jr., as the widow of Jeremiah III & the mother of Jeremiah IV. (Attached documents.)

She's also found in a 1741 deed selling the piece of land that was granted to her in the above division her father's estate. (Plymouth Deeds, Vol. 36, pg. 128) In it is states:

..."land set off to me in the Division of the Estate of my Honoured Father John Meritt...".

She is probably the "Widow Deborah Hatch", who died the 31st of October, 1755, probably at Hanover, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay, as is recorded in the First Congregational Church of Hanover records, pg. 187. However, there is no known burial or official death record in Hanover or Scituate.

DISAMBIGUATION

She is not the Deborah Merritt, born the 14th of April, 1711, to Jonathan Merritt, who married Joseph Nash & then Thomas Jenkins.
