Biography

Benjamin Merritt was born about 1777 in North Carolina. Benjamin Merritt of Jasper/Jones AND the Benjamin Merritt of Greene Co., GA both link back to the Halifax County, North Carolina Merritts. Benjamin Merritt descends from John Merritt Sr (ca 1707-1757) and the Benjamin Merritt of Greene Co., GA tie back to Thomas Merritt (ca 1705-1768) of Conoconary Swamp.

Benjamin received a fortunate draw in 1820 in the third Georgia land lottery for land in Jasper County. [1]

Benjamin was found in 1830 and 1840 in Jones County, Georgia. In 1840, he was living next door to his son, Green.[2][3]

Disambiguation

Many men share Benjamin Merritt's name and there is a propensity to inaccurately connect and merge the Benjamin Merritts.

  • Benjamin was not the Benjamin Merritt of Wake Co, NC who married Alice Terrell. According to the estate settlement of Benjamin Merritt in Wake County, he married twice with Alcey being his first wife.

The Benjamin Merritt of Jones and Jasper Co., GA is NOT the same Benjamin Merritt Of Wake Co., NC that married Alcey Terrell. That Benjamin Merritt never left Wake Co., North Carolina and died there in 1861. His estate settlement is listed on Ancestry as “ Benjamin Marriott”. In the estate settlement it shows he married twice..first to Aly Terrell and second to Mary Hopkins. He had children by both women.

The first wife of Benjamin Merritt Of Jones Co., GA is unknown. However, he married the widow Rebecca Watts in 1843 as his second wife.
