That's the left angle bracket, the word "references" (all lower case and plural) then a space, followed by the slash and the right angle bracket.

The computer is very particular - it does not understand that the slightest difference is supposed to mean the same thing - every character counts!

I can't see the editing page because of privacy setting, but I can guess that the line:

<references />

is missing. It should be immediately under the Sources heading. This tag is what causes the citations in the footnotes to be displayed (with appropriate number) wherever the tag is placed.
