Biography

Elmer Merritt was a New Yorker.

Elmer Merritt was born in 1886. He was the son of Adelbert Merritt and Betsy Gould. In 1900, Elmer was seen living with his parents, three sisters and three brothers, in Colesville Township, Broome County, New York.

In 1909, Elmer married Mabel Walling. The marriage took place in New York, United States.

Elmer was enlisted as part of the World War 1 Draft of 1917-1918. He was enlisted in Chenango County, New York. At the time, Elmer was 32-years-old and a self-employed farmer residing in Bainbridge, Chenango. On the draft registration he was described as being a white male, of medium height, slender build, with dark blue eyes and light brown hair. His wife was noted as his next of kin.

In 1925, Elmer was residing in Kirkwood, Broome County, New York.

In 1930, Elmer was living with his wife, three sons and four daughters, in Kirkwood, Broome County, New York. He was 44-years-old by this time.

In 1940, Elmer was 54. He, his wife and two of his children were residing in Windsor Town, Broome County. The census noticed that it was the same house as he was seen in from the previous census.

Elmer was a Christian man, attending the Ouaquaga Methodist Church.

Elmer passed away on January 4th 1961 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, New York. His death was a result of metastatic carcanoma of the stomach. Elmer was buried in Knox Cemetery, situated in Ouaquaga, Broome County, New York.
