Mathew Merritt was born about 1799 in North Carolina. His parents are unknown. Mathew was living in a different place in each census. In 1840, he was in Irwin County, Georgia. He potentially married his wife, Helen Euphronia Lanier, here. There were five children and one female between the ages of 20 and 30 (his wife) in the household.[1]
In 1850, Mathew and his family were in Baldwin County, Alabama. There were eight children in the household by this time. He worked as a blacksmith.[2]
By 1860, Mathew and his family were in Florida. They were living in Walton County in the 1860 census and Sumter County in the 1870 census.[3][4]
Mathew died a short time after the 1870 was taken. He was buried in the Tuscanooga Cemetery in Mascotte, Lake, Florida.[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Matthew by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Matthew:
Do you have a source for his marriage to Helen Euphronia Lanier? A brief Merritt genealogy drafted by Butler Jefferson Merritt states he married Ealon Slone and notes from "Pioneers of Wiregrass, Georgia" reference that marriage. The death certificate for Ann Jane (Merritt) Iley also lists Mathew Merritt/"Elan Sloan" as parents. The 1870 US Census lists a Matthew/Euphronia but they have South Carolina birthplaces and their children's birthdates overlap with the children in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Thanks!
