Juanita was born in 1849, the natural daughter of Frank Metzger and Apolonia Gutierrez.[1] Although her parents never married, Frank was very involved in her life, even paying her education expenses for the Loretto Academy, ran by the Sisters of Loretto.[2] She is listed on the 1860 Census for Santa Fe as a pupil there when she was 11 years old.[3]
In 1867, she married Henry Korte, an immigrant from Prussia[4] They had seven children, with six known:
She died in 1889, only nine months after her husband. She was 40 years old.[5]
Research Notes
One of her marriage records says that she was Frank's adopted daughter.[4] In the lawsuit, De Cordova v. Korte, NMSC-005, 1895, the defense claimed she was his "natural" daughter whom he later adopted officially.
