Biography

The only record we have on Caty Metzger is her marriage records to William Jarrett. in Greenbrier Marriage Book 1:64 Apl 9th 1807: Jarritt Wm to Caty Medsicar by Josiah Osborn

The records write her name as Caty Medsicar which some Jarrett researchers have translated as Madison but was actually Metzger. And she appears to be the daughter of James Metger.

The Greenbrier Marriage Bonds, now housed in the Greenbrier Historical Society, contain the bond and consent form for Wm. Jarritt, bondsman Abraham Jarritt (William's brother) for the marriage of William Garrett to "Caty Madsicar." The bond is signed by both men as "William Garrett", and "Abraham Jarrett". James Jarrett (as father of William) gave written consent as did Jams S.? Metzgar, apparently the father of the bride. Eli Jarrett (another brother) signs the consent forms as a witness. The bond is dated 7 April 1807. This would indicate that the couple was under 21 and required written consent.

In looking at various deed records, I did find mention of a Henry Metzger as a neighbor to the Jarretts on Muddy Creek.

The following analysis from Paul Crocker 28 Mar 2005: The 1820 census (Greenbrier Co., VA) lists the household of William Jarrett with 1 male under 10 years, 1 male 10 to 16 years, 1 male 26-45 years, 3 females under 10 years, 1 female 10 to 16 years, and 1 female 26-45 years. With this meager information I would draw the following conclusions. The 26-45 year old female in the household is undoubtedly Catherine Metzger as Barbara Smith was born in 1800 and would not fit this age category. The first known child of William and Barbara (Smith) Jarrett was a son Joseph Jarrett born in June 1823. Therefore I would tentatively conclude that first wife Catherine Metzger was alive when the 1820 census was taken and died shortly thereafter, perhaps in 1821. Further that William Jarrett remained a widower for about a year and then married his second wife Barbara Smith about 1822. The census would also lead one to believe that William and Catherine (Metzger) Jarrett had at least six children during the course of their marriage, two sons and four daughters. If we could assume the first child being born in 1808, and births two years apart thereafter, we would have children born in 1808, 1810, 1812, 1814, 1816 & 1818, which is entirely plausible. The dilemma being that I don't have a clue as to the names of these children, and there appears to be no records or other means of identifying them. If you have any ideas I would certainly welcome them. It sure would help things if the marriage record of William Jarrett and Barbara Smith turned up somewhere.***

Some say that Caty is buried in Madison Co, IN with husband and 2nd wife Busby Cemetery but I find that highly unlikely. William md his 2nd wife while still in VA/WV and it seems unlikely that they would have moved her coffin all the way to IN to be reburied.
