John H. Mikesell was born in Ohio, March 29, 1815. He was a mason by trade and was converted to Mormonism in his youth. He married Mary Grover, in May 1836, in Indiana. Two children were born to them. Mary Grover Mikesell died in 1843, and John married Margaret Nelson in May of 1844. They had nine children, of which David Uriah Mikesell was the next to the oldest child.
They suffered all the hardships of early pioneer life while coming to Utah. They started to Salt Lake with the first company, but the party split up, and so the Mikesells didn’t arrive in Salt Lake until October of 1847.
Later they moved to Payson, Utah, and colonized there. John took up the trade of mason.
They later moved to Lake Shore, Utah where they spent the remainder of their lives. They were true to church and faith and were endowed in the old Endowment House in Salt Lake City.
John, being acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith, bore testimony that to him, Joseph Smith was truly sincere and devout and that he was chosen of God.
His wife, Margaret, died August 11, 1904.
John H. Mikesell died just three weeks later, about September 2, 1904.[1]
