Biography

John is born on the 15 May 1844 in the Village of Ratho, on the Union Canal, west of the City of Edinburgh, in the Parish of Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland. However, his surname is incorrectly spelt as "Miller" on the Birth Record[1]. He is the son of Robert Millar and Christian "Christina" Headridge.

Children

It doesn't appear as if John and Wilhelmina had any children.

Residence

We find John, on the night of the Census Record of 1851, living with his parents Robert (Millar) and Christian "Christina" (Headridge) and siblings James, Margaret, George and Agnes (Millar). Their surname is spelt as "Miller" in the Census and they reside at a Cottar House, in the Hamlet of Gogar Green, north of Union Canal, east of the Village of Ratho, which is west of the City of Edinburgh, in the Parish of Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland[3]. In 1861, the family are living at the Ploughman's House, in the Hamlet of Ratho Mains, southwest of the Village of Ratho, south of Union Canal, and west of the City of Edinburgh, in the Parish of Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland. Robert and Christina, along with children James, Margaret, John, George, Agnes and Robert (Millar) live there[4].

Robert and Christina are still in the Hamlet of Ratho Mains, in Midlothian, in 1871, along with children John, Agnes and Robert (Millar)[5]. The Census of 1881 reveals that John (Millar) has married Wilhelmina (Baigrie) and the couple live in the Village of Ratho, Parish of Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland[6].

In 1891, John and Wilhelmina have taken in Boarder and widow, Mary Ann (Harrison) and they all reside in the south side of the Village of Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland[7]. By 1901, the couple are living on their own in the Village of Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland[8].

Occupation

With the Census of 1861, John's occupation is recorded as being a Labourer, however, by 1871, he is working as a Quarryman. We find him, in 1881, employed as a Whinstone Dresser. It appears as if he continues working in a Quarry throughout his life.

Death

We lose sight of John (Millar) after the Census Record of 1901 and it's possible he moved away from the Village of Ratho, in Midlothian, Scotland. More research is needed to verify the exact place and date of his death.
