Biography

Occupation: Marine Engineer.

Forbes Campbell Millar served his engineering apprenticeship in the Caledon Shipyard, Dundee, Scotland. In the evening, he attended Dundee Technical College (in around 1900) to study marine engineering and to obtain his engineer tickets.

After he finished his apprenticeship, he then worked for various shipping lines as an engineer.

In the early to mid 1930s, he left working on the sea to run a tobacconist's shop in the Nethergate area of Dundee, and lived in the Nethergate, too, below the shop. He then moved to 1 Sibbald Street, Dundee, with his family. After that, he lived in the village of Letham in Angus, with his wife and two sons. His final address was Arklay Street in Dundee.

He was an engineer on the Galway Castle (part of the Union-Castle fleet) when it was torpedoed near Fastnet in September 1918.

On the day of his wedding to Helen Hutton on 12 November 1920, Forbes Campbell Millar was living at 6 Whitehall Crescent, Dundee; Helen Hutton's address on the same day was 44 Catherine Street, Dundee. The witnesses at the wedding were Bruce Campbell Hutton (one of the bride's brothers), and Annie Campbell Millar (the eldest of the bridegroom's two sisters).

From around 1946 to 1965, my grandparents lived at 'Vinny Lee' cottage in Letham, Angus, Scotland. The cottage as previously called 'Blunt Neuk', but my grandmother didn't like that name and so changed the name to 'Vinny Lee'. My grandparents moved back to Dundee (in Arklay Street) in around 1965/66.
