Death of Mr A. E. Millard.
Regret was everywhere expressed in town towards the latter end of last week
when it became known that Mr A. E. Millard, Mayor of South Singleton, was
dangerously ill. On Saturday his condition was considered hopeless, and all
through the day and night he was at death's door, and at 5 o'clock on Sunday
morning passed away easily and almost unconsciously to those gathered around.
Peri-corditis, with pneumonic condition of the lungs, was the cause of death. The
deceased was a native of Goulburn, and was only 29 years of age. His father
is a resident of Young, but arrived in time to see thelast on earth of a loved
son. Mr Millard's illness was only of nine days' duration, and on Friday night
week, contrary to the advice of friends, he persisted in attending at the Council
Chambers to preside at a meeting of the Friendly Appeal Court. During some
years of residence Mr Millard identified himself with many movements of common
interest to the townspeople, belonged to the Masonic body, the Loyal Orange
Lodge, the Sons of Temperance, and the Protestant Alliance Friendly
Society ; was for some time an alderman of South Singleton, and only recently succeeded Ald Bennett in the office of Mayor, after the termination of the much-discussed deadlock. He also occupied a seat on the committee of the Benevolent Asylum, and in other ways
helped to make himself a useful member of society. The funeral took place on Monday and was largely attended. Members of Lodge United St. Andrew, No. 34, U.G.L. of New South Wales; of the Sons of Temperance, Loyal Orange Lodge, and of the Protestant
Alliance marched in prooession, the coffin being borne by members of the several societies. Then came relatives and friends, the general public on foot, the aldermen of South Singleton, the Mayor and aldermen of north Singleton, and a number of people in buggies and on horseback. At the Wesleyan cemetery the Rev. H. Wiles conducted
service, and the funeral devotions of the bodies with which deceased was connected were also carried out. Mr Millard leaves a widow and three young children.
