Biography

Harrison was born in 1829, son of Samuel Millard (-1874) and Maria (Ham) Millard (abt.1796-1870). As a young child, he expressed significant interest in music, which was supported by his parents. Notably, by the age of ten, he was singing in the Hadyn and Handel Society as an Alto.

In 1851, records indicate he left for Europe with the intent of pursuing a musical career, and studied for three years in Italy under well known musicians in Italy. He traveled and performed as a tenor in Great Britain, returning to Boston in 1854. [1]


In 1861, he enlisted in the 71st regiment of Massachusetts as a private. By 1863, Millard was serving in New York, as a 1st Lieutenant in the New York Reigment. During the Battle of Chickamauga in 1that he was no longer fit for duty [2]



He died in Manhattan on Sept 10, 1895 [3]. He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston, Massachusetts with his family [4]

Career

He was a well known folk song composer in the 1800's. He published numerous works:
