Biography

Rachel was Noah Grant's third wife and he was her second husband, the first being a Mr. Kelly. She was the daughter of Colonel Miller of Jamestown, Virginia [1] Not the daughter of Robert Miller from Pennsylvania.

An article in the The American Genealogist, New Haven, Connecticut: D. L. Jacobus in 1975 disputes some of this information for the following reasons, 1) The president referred to her as Miss Kelley, and a search for land or probate records for Rachel Miller or Rachel Kelley found nothing that would indicate a previous husband.[2]

Her headstone indicates a birth of Jun 1746, and while many believe this makes her too old to be the mother of the children shown, it is on her headstone[3] To make her more the right age, the assumption is that the digits are reversed and should be 1764, which would make her 40 when her last child is born.[4]

A search of DAR and SAR databases and records indicate no birth record for Rachel[5][6]

There is an error for her residence and death. She was in Deerfield Township in Portage County Ohio. I live next door to the cemetery where she is buried.

Thank you, it has been corrected.

I think the parents on this profile are incorrect, they would have been beyond normal child bearing age, and the father died well before her birth. Thanks for helping improve Wikitree
