Biography

Aaron was, for many years, my earliest known Miller Ancestor. He married Mary Zook in 1810, in Franklin Co. KY. The Zook family tie seemed the only vehicle for learning Miller history prior to their life in Kentucky.

Census records help bracket Aaron's birth between 1780 and 1785. Aaron was of age by 1801, but he isn't in the Franklin Co. KY tax records until 1809, when he is shown with Peter, David and Solomon Zook. In 1810 Aaron Miller is shown in the tax record as administrator for the Zooks. David Zook and his son, Solomon Zook, had died that year.

Aaron Miller's father-in-law, David Zook, is found in 1795 Mason Co. KY tax records. David Zook's sister, Deborah Zook, married David Miller, who is also found in the those tax records. These records were pointed out by my Louisville correspondent (and friend) Arthur I Miller. Art also saw that the nearness of David Zook, David Miller and Ludwig Miller, in Pennsylvania, helps to confirm that David was Ludwig Miller's son.

In September 2012, I received a copy of the 1901 Brief History of the Miller Family, written by Aaron's nephew, James Newton Miller (JNM). I now know that Aaron was born to Samuel Miller and Margaret Davidson. Samuel's 1827 will (not quoted by JNM) names his children. Orphan's court records track the distribution of Samuel's estate. Four of Samuel's sons were to share in the home place after Margaret's death. Aaron was among them. JNM gives Aaron's birth as 1780 and says he " went to Kentucky"

Aaron's father, Samuel, homesteaded land in Luzerne TWP, Fayette Co as early as 1772. Virginia documentation was transferred to a Pennsylvania warrant 1786. Aaron’s sister, Lydia, married neighbor, Joseph Grable, and by 1790 was in the census of Nelson Co. KY. Their son, Samuel Miller Grable was born, Bardstown KY, 1795. When Aaron was a young man, Grandfather, Ludwig, owned property in German Twp., not far from Peter Zook, the grandfather of Aaron’s future wife. A great many of Aaron’s Pennsylvania neighbors and relatives went to Kentucky. By 1807, a tax record of Montgomery Co. KY shows Aaron Miller near Henry Myers and Martin Overturf. These are now recognized as the spouses of Aaron's aunts, Hannah and Catherine.

Aaron and Mary's Franklin Co. KY marriage record (May 7, 1810) showed consent of her mother, Polly (Mary) Zook and the bride's bondsman (brother) Peter Zook. Aaron's brother in law, Jacob Zook served during the war of 1812. Aaron's brother in law, Peter Zook, was the father of Aaron Miller T. Zook, a Baptist preacher in Missouri and KS.

Our Aaron is shown in census for Franklin Co. KY. He can also be followed in the tax records. In 1842 he is shown in the tax list, preceding his son, David Z. Miller. In 1844, the tax list shows David Z Miller followed by Mrs. Mary Miller. The "Commonwealth" newspaper doesn't include any notice of his death, but his name is included (October 5, 1841) in a list of persons with letters left at the post office.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Aaron by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Aaron:
