Research Notes

George Brundage, the nephew of Georgie, on A4/7/2014, asked his General Practitioner (GP) about the cause of Georgie's death, and showed him the death certificate (Georgie was my George Brundage's uncle on his mother's side and died at age 4 in 1919.) Georgie's death certificate said that he died of peritonsillar abscess followed by Diptheria (?). George Brundage was told by his GP that Georgie could not breath, and the Dr. Macready, who was present, should have cut a hole in Georgie's wind pipe so he could breath. Also, today, children are vaccinated at the age of 3; so, this death would not have happened today. The GP said that the death appeared to be unnecessary and had more to do with the state of the medical profession/science than anything else.

"A Bacterial infection, diphtheria usually appears as an upper respiratory illness, with sore throat and low-grade fever, but it can also produce more unusual symptoms. In severe cases, lymph nodes swell, causing difficulty breathing. A white membrane may form in the throat producing a pronounced barking cough and blocking the airway. In the worst cases, a toxin appears in the blood, spreading throughout the body and potentially causing organ or nerve damage, heart of kidney failure, or paralysis. In the nineteenth century, before effective antibiotics were discovered and a vaccine developed for diphtheria, up to half of those infected died." This information was obtained from the book, Prairie Fires, The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser page 145.
