Margaret Miller (b.1603), dau of Thomas Miller Gent. of Bishop's Stortford, and sister of Joseph Miller of Newton, MA, M: 12 Mar 1631, John Stonard, in the parish of St. Dunstabs-in-the-West, London, England (Par. Reg.) The parents of John Stonard have not been found at this date, May 1941. Several Stonards lived in Essex Co., England in the region of Loughton, Stapleford-Abbott and Harlow. John and Margaret (Miller) Stonard remained in England ten years after their marriage before removing to Roxbury, New England. Thus there was time enough for them to have had several children born in England. However the Parish Register of St. Dunstans-in-the-West contains no baptisms nor burials of their children. Two children, probably of John and Margaret (Alice and Joseph), about eight to ten years old are supposed to have arrived in Roxbury. The Stonards arrived in Roxbury 1642/43; they purchased from Richard Pepper a house and eight acres of land paying 50 pounds. He mortgaged the house and land to Governor, the Hon. Thomas Dudley in 1645, which mortgage was discharged Jan 1646. They may have had younger children for the Inventory contains this item: "1 trundle bedd". None are mentioned in Roxbury Vital Records. John Stonard D: 13 Aug 1649, "midle aged or little more" indicating his birth about 1600, three years before Margaret.
About a year later Margaret, at the age of 47/48, and the widow of John Stonard, marriedThomas Waterman of Roxbury as his second wife. The latter is thought to be from Bishop's Hatfield, Co. Essex, a few miles east of Bishop's Stortford. Waterman died 1653 leaving the bulk of his estate to his wife. She died 1682, aged 79, at Dedham, probably in the home of her niece and principal heir; Ann Bullard nee Burnap. Joseph Stannard ( Stonard) of Hartford, Haddam and Saybrook, CT, presumed to be a son of John and Margaret Stonard, was probably named after Margaret's brother Joseph Miller. Alice Stonard, dau of John Stonard, was probably named after Alice the sister of Margaret (also called Agnes, Anise, and Ann). she married Anthony Shaw in Apr 1653 by Increase Nowell and had Ruth who M: John Cook; Grace who M: Joseph Church, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Israel. Joseph Stannard M: Elizabeth Spencer in Haddam, CT about 1667. (14 years after his sister Alice was married) They had Joseph (1668), Samuel (1669), John (1671), William (1674) and Elizabeth (1677). Joseph Stannard D: 1688 at Saybrook, CT per New London Probate District No. 5033.[1]
