Due to a miscommunication, this Anne Miller (Miller-3111) and another were inadvertently merged by mistake. All references to the 2nd Anne Miller have been deleted in this biography and sources. This Anne Miller has been put back to it's original state prior to 22 Aug 2018 mishap.

I have since decided that these two Anne Miller's very well could have been the same person after finding a Crow family living in Essex Co., VA (county known Miller's lived in the 1700's). Also all indications are that my known Miller's had connections to Cecil County, Maryland where her husband resided for some period of time.

Walter Crow was born 25 Aug 1717, in Sassafras, Cecil, Province of Maryland, the son of John Crow and Martha Newman. About 1747, he was married to Ann Miller. She was the daughter of John Miller and Sarah Hadley. Ann was born 26 Apr 1720, in Christchurch, Middlesex County, Colony of Virginia. She died 4 May 1811, Mercer, Mercer County, Kentucky, United States.

Ann Miller

Ann Miller, wife of Walter Crow, has been a source of much debate. It's generally accepted by some Crow researchers that Walter Crow and Anne Miller were married in 1740 in Middlesex County, although no records exist of this marriage (that we know of). Ann is listed as Walter's wife in his 1789 will. There's even a theory that Ann came from England with a family bible. John Finley Crow's memoirs name Mary Stuart as his grandmother, not Ann Miller. After considering all available research, we submit that there were two Ann Millers born to John Miller of Middlesex County, of two different wives[9]... There is also some evidence of Ann (wife of Walter) having the name "Wright" as well[10]

Marriage Notes for Walter Crow and Anne Miller: "Walter and Ann Crow lived in New Castle County, Delaware. Not much is known about how or when they got there but we do know that the family moved to Virginia either in late 1763 or early 1764. New Castle County is directly across the state line from Sassafras Parish, Maryland, where Walter was born. It's generally accepted that six children were born in New Castle County, although we haven't found any supporting documentation for these births.

1. Mary, born circa 1742. 2. James, born circa 1744 3. John, born circa 1751 4. William, born 8 Nov. 1755 5. Benjamin, born circa 1757. 6. Jacob, born 3 April 1759."[11] [12]

Anne Miller-Crow is buried at:

Kentucky, USA[13]

Ann was born in 1720. She is the daughter of John Miller and Sara Hadley.

Anne was born in 1720.

DECIDED TO TIE THE ANNE MILLER OF THIS PROFILE TO WALTER BENJAMIN CROW (WikiTree: Crow-221):

Over the past year or two, I have discovered ties of my Miller's to Essex County, Virginia where there were Crow family members in the 1700's. Indications are that the town of Millers Tavern, Virginia (in Essex Co. near King & Queen Co. line) was named after a tavern one or more of my Miller's owned there in the 1700's/early 1800's. Several of my known Miller family members are documented as owning taverns. At least two of my direct male line Miller's are documented in King & Queen Co. during a portion of their lives. Few records survive from K&Q Co. Also I am seeing connections of my Virginia Miller's to the Samuel Miller, Esq. family of Cecil County, Maryland, where Walter Benjamin Crow-221 lived. Also a great...great uncle of mine (Dabney Miller circa 1750 to circa 1810) witnessed a contract in 1784 for a James Rumsey's to obtain Virginia patents on Rumsey's steam boat invention. James Rumsey was born in Cecil Co., Maryland. My early Virginia Miller's had other ties to Maryland also.

Not sure if this is just a coincidence: Edward Miller (b- circa 1644) was a son of James Miller, Sr. James died in 1656 in York Co., VA, and was the possible brother of my 7th great grandfather). Edward Miller patented 250 acres of land in 1666 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia by paying for the importation of an Elizabeth NEWMAN and an Anne BROOKES as well as 3 other persons. Walter Benjamin Crow's mother was Martha NEWMAN; and Martha's mother was Mary BROOKS. Martha NEWMAN's father was from Northern Ireland. There was a group of my Miller's that immigrated to Northern Ireland in the late 1600's from Scotland. They then immigrated to America from Northern Ireland in the early 1700's. I have DNA ties to Northern Ireland (as well as Scotland) on my father's side. My known Miller's in early Virginia had several connections to person's from Ireland.

Related to the above: Edward Miller's (b- c. 1644) son, Nicholas Miller witnessed the 1692 will of a Thomas Taboror in Isle of Wight Co., VA. The administer of the will was a John NEWMAN. Possibly the same John NEWMAN took the 1695 estate inventory of Nicholas Smith in Isle of Wight Co., VA. Nicholas Smith/Smyth was the father of Edward Miller's (b-c. 1644) wife, Sara Smith/Smyth.

Related to the above: A Thomas NEWMAN (age 15) arrived in Virginia on the ship Plaine Joan in 1635. This was the same ship that a James Miller (age 18) arrive. This James Miller may have been the James Miller, father of Edward Miller (b-c. 1644).

I also discovered that Sara Hadley married a different John Miller than I had originally thought (very difficult to determine what John Miller Virginia documents refer to (so many John Miller's). So Anne Miller (daughter of John Miller & Sara Hadley MAY have been the Anne Miller that married Walter Benjamin Crow-221 of Cecil County, Maryland. I am reconnecting Anne Miller as the spouse of Walter Benjamin Crow-221. However I am not 100 percent sure that this was the case. Jim Miller

Research Notes

You will notice there are two Anne Miller's listed as daughters of John Miller and Sara Hadley. I doubt that the daughter listed as Ann (Miller) Crow was John Miller and Sara Hadley's daughter since this just seems to be a guess in the fact that an Ann Miller was born in Middlesex Co., VA (Christ Church) that would be about the correct age. This type of error frequently occurs since the Christ Church Parish records are some of the few parish 1600's/1700's records that have survived to modern times. So people who are looking for ancestors often assume any persons with similar names and close birth years in the Christ Church Parish records in Middlesex Co., VA are the ancestors they are looking for. In fact they often are not, given their ancestor's birth record was lost with time as most have with the exception of the fairly extensive surviving records from Christ Church in Middlesex County, Virginia. This is somewhat confirmed by the verbiage below from Ann (Miller) Crow's (who died in Kentucky) profile on FindAGrave. Below part of verbiage from: Find A Grave: Memorial #81013747 (attached to Anne Wright (Crow) Miller) About my 6th Great-Grandmother: "Who was Ann Miller, wife of Walter Crow? by Sarah Barker No one really knows. Nor do we know for a fact that her name was really Miller. The designation of Walter Crow's wife as Ann "Miller" has been attributed, somewhat circuitously, to John W. Wayland Ph.D, author of "A History of Rockingham County, Virginia," and similar books on Rockingham. How this came about is unclear, but the name Ann Miller seems to have stuck. Assuming that Ann was truly Ann Miller, who was she? Where did she come from? One theory has been put forth that she was the daughter of John Miller and Sarah Hadley of Middlesex County, Virginia. This theory results from the single fact that a birth record for an Ann Miller exists in the Christ Church Parish register in the appropriate time frame. There is no marriage entry for this Ann Miller, nor any record in existence to indicate that Walter Crow ever met or married this particular Ann Miller. The existence of this birth record is simply a convenience seized upon to prove what is essentially unprovable. The name Miller was very common during Colonial times, and surviving church records few and far between - if, in fact, church records were kept.

It is possible the Ann Miller who was the daughter of John Miller and Sara Hadley never married and never left Middlesex Co., VA based on the fact an Ann Miller was listed on the 1783 Middlesex Co., VA Census. This Ann Miller would have been 63 years old in 1783. However there is no way to know if this was the Ann Miller born in 1720 in Middlesex Co., VA. http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/middlesex/census/1783/1783taxlow.txt Link above notes an "Miller, Ann, "Senr" ("Senr" may mean her husband has died or it could mean "Sister" as an nun?) on the 1783 Lower Precinct Taxlist for Middlesex County, Virginia with 4 white and 1 black in the household. Other Miller's listed on same 1783 Lower Precinct Taxlist above are: Andrew Miller - 7 white; 9 black (I am not sure who this Andrew Miller was at this point - MAYBE a descendant of Alexander Miller, son of Patrick Miller b-1620 given Alexander had a son named Andrew) Christopher Miller - 4 white; zero black (Likely the Christopher Miller born to John Miller and Sara Hadley on 1/27/1726 at age 57.) Biography Ann was born in 1720. She is the daughter of John Miller and Sara Hadley. There is some confusion around this Ann Miller (some people list her as dying in Kentucky; however there appears to be no sources indicating this is the case; so the Ann that died in Kentucky is likely NOT the Ann Miller that was born in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1720).

Miller-59083 and Miller-3111 do not represent the same person because: When I asked the profile managers of Ann Wright (Miller) Crow for sources to confirm Ann Miller left Middlesex Co., Virginia and traveled hundreds of miles to Kentucky, NONE could be offered other than the same/similar names and general birth years of the two Ann's. Given there are some indications that Ann Miller was in Middlesex Co., VA when in her 60's based on census data, these two Ann's appear to be different people.

I think your Ann Miller's father (John Miller b-8/4/1695) is being confused with actually this John Miller's father who was also John Miller b- about 1665 in Elizabeth City Co., Virginia). John Miller b- 8/4/1695 appears to have died when an infant since his father named a 2nd son John Miller who was born 3/16/1721/1722 who also dies as an infant. Even a third son was named John Miller born 7/10/1729 who also dies as an infant with his twin brother James. This all confused me also until I found a transcript of John Miller's (b- Abt. 1665) will. I also have a transcript of his father's will. The reason for the confusion is that John Miller (b- Abt. 1665) had three different wives (1. Mical Christopher; 2. Jane Hill; 3. Sara Hadley). He lived to an age of about 77 - had 14 children.

If it bothers you that much, then go ahead and remove the "Wright" from the profile. But it does cause one to ponder, if you feel that something "was an error and misleading", do you also have evidence that it is incorrect, or are you assuming it so.

Also, I cannot, for some reason, read your attached (Ann Crow Image 2) document. Can you save it as a jpeg, and re-inter it?

Since there is extensive research to Anne Miller Crow in the attached pdf, the name of 'Wright' is never mentioned. I have found no documentation which supports the added name 'Wright' to Anne. Therefore if agreed with by the other managers, it needs to be removed. Unless, of course, either has supporting documentation.

The name of Anne Wright Miller has been seen as a sister to Anne Miller Crow and has the same birth, death dates and locations. I feel this was an error and misleading.
